From West Virginia Railroads - Model Railroading

By the mid-1850's several Kanawha Valley coal mining operations had built short railroads for hauling coal to loading facilities on the Kanawha River, for shipment via the Ohio River to "western" markets. The Metro Valley Region of West Virginia includes the following counties:
