Norfolk & Western: Change to Standard Gauge
The Annual Report of the Board of Directors of the Norfolk & Western Railway to the Shareholders, for the Year Ending December 31st, 1885 contains a narrative concerning the company's plan to convert its trackage standard gauge (4 feet, 8-1/2 inches) by June 1, 1886. The report notes that of 11 railroads crossing or connecting with the company's lines, only 2 were of the same gauge as the Norfolk & Western. Total cost for gauge conversion was expected to be $309,000.
