On January 1, 1853, the first through train from the Atlantic Ocean to the Ohio River reached Wheeling, WV, via the recently completed Cumberland to Wheeling extension of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad. The Northern Panhandle Region of West Virginia includes the following counties:
